Illawong Beach
Illawong Beach is home to Quota Park, with public facilities including toilets, barbecues, picnic tables and a playground. There are both on and off dog leash areas along the beach, which makes it a perfect stretch for sunset strolls for local dog owners. This beach is also a popular spot for fishing, with avid fishermen casting from the beach or into the mangrove-lined creeks. From the beach, you can enjoy excellent views of nearby islands and the Hay Point Coal Terminal.
Swimming at The Bluewater Lagoon
Just 10 kilometres away from The Waters Ooralea (a short 16-minute drive) and located at the city centre is the Bluewater Lagoon. It’s an enjoyable swimming facility with three large swimming pools, a 19.5-metre water slide, children’s playground, and a feature waterfall. Visiting the Regional Botanic Gardens
Just 6km away you’ll discover the vast collection of native plants and trees located at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens. Walking around the facility on the 3-kilometre trail, you’ll find five differently themed gardens that have been constructed in a 10-phase period over 15 years. The collection of gardens includes the Gymnosperm Garden, the Malta Garden, and the Screens and Hedges Garden.
